Contactor

An electrical relay that controls power flow to the AC compressor and condenser fan. Contractors wear out over 5–10 years — pitting on the contacts causes intermittent failures. Signs of a failing contactor: AC won't start despite thermostat calling for cooling, or hums but doesn't start. Replacement cost: $75–$200.
