Thin metal strips (typically galvanized steel, aluminum, or copper) that seal joints and transitions on a roof — around chimneys, vents, skylights, valleys, and where the roof meets walls. Flashing failure is the #1 cause of roof leaks. A new roof requires new flashing — be suspicious of any roofer who proposes reusing old flashing.
