PLUMBING

Galvanic Corrosion

Electrochemical deterioration that occurs when two dissimilar metals are in contact in the presence of water. Common in older homes where copper pipes connect directly to galvanized steel — the steel corrodes much faster. Symptoms: orange or brown water, localized pipe failure. Solution: dielectric unions (insulating fittings) at transitions, or full repiping in severe cases.
