The fluid that circulates through an AC system to move heat. R-22 (Freon) was phased out in 2020 — if your system uses R-22, refrigerant is expensive and scarce. R-410A (Puron) is the current standard but being phased down due to global warming potential. New systems use R-454B (Puron Advanced), a lower-GWP refrigerant.
