Sewer Inspection Camera Upsell

A routine sewer camera inspection is used to show homeowners alarming (sometimes staged) footage to sell unnecessary sewer repairs.

How This Scam Works

A plumber offers a "free" or discounted sewer inspection, often marketing it as a routine service or home purchase protection. They run a camera through your line, then show you footage of cracks, root intrusion, or offset joints — some of which may be cosmetic and not actively causing problems. The repair quote follows: $4,000–$15,000 for trenchless repair or replacement. Root intrusion, for example, is common in older neighborhoods and may not require immediate repair if the line is still flowing properly.

Warning Signs

  • Inspection was offered for free or very cheaply as a promotion
  • Technician shows alarming footage but won't provide a copy of the video
  • Recommends full sewer replacement for cosmetic issues that aren't causing flow problems
  • Diagnosis delivered verbally with same-day repair pressure
  • Quote doesn't distinguish between active failures and deferred maintenance items
  • Won't refer you for a second opinion or share the footage for independent review

What To Do Instead

Always request a copy of the sewer camera footage — legitimate plumbers will provide it. Get a second plumber to review the footage before authorizing major repairs. Root intrusion that isn't causing backups may only need annual hydro-jetting, not full replacement.
