Fall HVAC Transition: Switching from Cooling to Heating in East Texas
What to do in October before your first cold night of the year.
Why now?
East Texas gets 20–40 heating days per year, but they arrive unpredictably — sometimes as a hard freeze with little warning. Discovering your furnace doesn't work at 11pm in late November is avoidable.
Your Checklist
- ✓Test your heating system on a mild day before you actually need it — run it for 30 minutes
- ✓Replace air filter before switching to heating mode
- ✓Check gas connections and smell for any gas odors (call gas company immediately if detected)
- ✓Inspect heat pump reversing valve operation — should switch from cooling to heating mode smoothly
- ✓Schedule a furnace or heat pump service if not done in the past 12 months
- ✓Test carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms — replace batteries if needed
- ✓Check your attic for animal nesting activity that could block vents (fall is prime season)
- ✓Seal any air leaks found around window frames and door thresholds before heating season
