Hurricane Season Prep for East Texas Homeowners
The full checklist before June 1 — roof, generator, insurance, and more.
Why now?
The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs June 1 – November 30. East Texas has direct exposure to Gulf landfalls — Rita (2005), Ike (2008), and Harvey (2017) all left significant damage in Liberty and Chambers counties. Preparation in May means you're ready on June 1.
Your Checklist
- ✓Inspect roof for any loose or missing shingles from spring storms
- ✓Clean and inspect gutters — clogged gutters cause significant water intrusion during heavy rain
- ✓Trim trees near the house — branches overhanging the roof are the #1 storm damage cause
- ✓Test your generator: run it under load for 30 minutes, check oil and fuel
- ✓Review your homeowner's insurance policy: know your deductibles, coverage limits, and flood exclusions
- ✓Verify your flood insurance is active (homeowner's policies don't cover flooding)
- ✓Document your home's contents with a video walkthrough — store in cloud storage
- ✓Identify and mark your main water shutoff valve
- ✓Stock emergency supplies: 72-hour water supply, flashlights, battery radio, first aid kit
- ✓Know your evacuation route from Chambers/Liberty County to higher ground
