Post-Storm Roof and Property Check for East Texas Homeowners

What to do in the 48 hours after a significant hail or wind event.

Why now?

Insurance claim deadlines are typically 1–2 years from the date of damage. But storm chasers swarm within days, and the pressure to act immediately is intense. This checklist gives you a framework to move efficiently without being rushed into a bad decision.

Your Checklist

  • Safely photograph your roof from the ground using a zoom lens — don't climb up
  • Check gutters, downspouts, and AC unit fins for hail dents (visible indicators of hail size)
  • Inspect window screens and trim for hail impact marks
  • Document any interior water intrusion with photos and timestamps
  • Check your attic for daylight or fresh water stains within 24 hours of the storm
  • Call your insurance company directly to start any claim — not a storm chaser contractor
  • Wait 48 hours before signing anything with any contractor who approaches you
  • Verify any contractor's license at tdlr.texas.gov before allowing roof access
