Thermal Expansion Tank

A small tank (typically 2–4 gallons) connected to a water heater to absorb pressure from thermal expansion of heated water. Required by code in closed water systems (where a pressure reducing valve or check valve prevents backflow). Without an expansion tank, pressure cycling causes premature water heater failure, dripping T&P valves, and stress on fixtures. Often required when replacing a water heater in Texas.
